LAIRD DISTRICT COUNCIL

Welcome and Introductions (attendance sheet circulated)

Attendance: Tanja, Stanley, Rhonda, Richard, Rick, Debbie, Roger, Alex, Jeannette, Bradley

1.   Review of Minutes - Motion to accept the minutes by Tanja

                                        - Seconded by Stanley

 

2.   Additions

a.    Art displays from ArtSparks Action Arts Council Visual Arts Program. CARS purchased a pair of frames for art done by persons with disabilities to be displayed each month in the front lobby. If you want to do the same call Alexis Milinusic at 342-9122.

b.   Self Advocate Conference registration subsidy is available. If you need half off the registration fee, write a letter and send it to selfadvocateconference@hotmail.com or fax it to 346-8015 before January 23.

 

3.   P.D.D. Update – Roger Will

a.    Community Conversations – About 80 people attended the three Community Conversation meetings held in the region in November. Results of the sessions will be put together and available soon.

 

b.   Board Member Resignation – Charlene Burns resigned in

   November. The Board will be looking for a replacement

   soon.

c.    Awards received by PDD Central – Central Region

    Community Board received a Silver Premier’s award for    

    showing how the their entire work matches very well with

    the criteria for public service excellence.

d.   PDD Program Vision, Mission, and Core Business – As

    part of wanting to support the PDD program as a

    provincial program, work happening to make a common

    vision, mission, and core business for the program. The

    idea is to make sure all citizens across Alberta get the

    same type and quality of services.

e.    New PDD Central resources – Two new guides have been published on the PDD Central website that can help individuals and families.

                                                            i.      The Take Charge: Guide to Choosing Family Managed Supports.

                                                         ii.      The Transition Planning Guide

f.     ACDS Spring Conference Call for Participants – anyone wishing to present at the conference is being asked to respond by January 18th to www.pdd.org/central

 

4.   Self Advocate Updates

a.    C.S.S. Community Connections

                                                            i.      Restorations from flood all finished. Grand opening was in December.

                                                         ii.      Memberships cost 5$. New Lady’s Cooking Class and Men’s Cooking Class. Call Gail Finley 347-8844 for more information.

b.   Michener Power Council

                                                            i.      On October hosted an Election Forum for City Election. With Money Finders raised over $4800 for the Self Advocate Conference.

                                                         ii.      Weekly meetings continue.

                                                      iii.      Master Minds group talks about Rights and Responsibilities and speaking up for yourself.

                                                      iv.      With CASA celebrated CLAM in October.

                                                         v.      IDDP membership

                                                      vi.      Had a practicum Student from RDC.

                                                   vii.      Attended an Affordable Housing Forum.

                                                viii.      Raised $500 for the United Way.

                                                      ix.      Had a Christmas Concert.

c.    C.A.R.S. Cougars

                                                            i.      New Workshop Committee with Advocates and agency staff to setup and run workshops for both staff and individuals. First Workshop is Abuse Protocol.

                                                         ii.      Elections for the Cougars Board on January 29th

                                                      iii.      Doing Plain Language with CASA.

                                                      iv.      Valentines supper and dance being planned.

d.   Relax Crew

                                                            i.      Elections have two new people Stephanie as Vice-President and Cheryl as Secretary. Darryl is still President and John is still Treasurer.

                                                         ii.      Looking for volunteers for the Self Advocate Conference BBQ.

                                                      iii.      X-mas concert had 104 people attend.

                                                      iv.      X-mas dinner and New Years parties where great.

                                                         v.      Valentines party coming up.

                                                      vi.      Drumocracy ion October, November, and December was very popular.

                            

5.   Financial Report

-        Operating Budget - $2000.00

-        Learning Initiatives Budget – $2344.00

        Looking for learning opportunities to partner and offer

        workshops, classes, guest speakers for everyone in the

        community.

8.   Information Sharing

a.    Social Forum Feb 29-March 2 at Red Deer College. The Rights Learning and theatre Group will be doing a show

b.   “Self Advocacy- Where is the Journey Leading Us?” Project has Surveys Out. One for Self-Advocates, one for Agency level Supports, and one for Executive Directors. To get a Survey call Tanja Baker at 340-5626

c.    ACDS Spring Conference Call for Participants is out. See application at www.acds.ca Conference is April 30th to May 2nd in Edmonton.

d.   Community Services Network meetings on the second Wednesday of each month 12 to 1 pm at CIRS.

e.    Health Network Meetings on the first Wednesday of each month 12 to 1 pm at Crimson Star Room in City Hall.

f.     Diversity Film Series at Carnival Wednesdays 1:00 pm on Jan 23rd, 30th, Feb 6th and 13th. At the Hub at 6:00 pm on Jan 23rd, and Feb 13th. At the Snell in the Library on Jan 30th and Feb 13th at 3:30 pm.
