LAIRD Meeting Minutes

 

OCTOBER 1, 2003

Location: CARS Office #300 - 5000 50th Ave.

CALL THE MEETING TO ORDER AT 12:30 PM

IN ATTENDANCE:

  • The meeting started by Kim Hartell(CIRS) doing a presentation on accessing the gateway. Some of the key points were as follows:

    • www.pddgateway.org is the site
    • Links include the following:
        Central Alberta Board
        Inventory of Knowledge and Skills
        Ongoing Initiatives
        Central Alberta Information
        New and interesting
        Provincial PDD board site.

  • If changes are needed on the gateway site submit information to Kim. She will try to make changes within a week. If making changes please send addresses on where changes need to be made. Kim gave us an example. Changes include if there is a mistake, you want something added or there is a broken link. In order to go to the link you want, right click/ copy, then left to bring up the CIRS link, and right click to paste. Kim stated she is interest knowing the following pertaining to the web site www.pddgateway.org

    • What works?
    • What doesn’t?
    • Is it confusing?

  • Information updates for www.pdd (central) are occurring through Stephen Golub

  • Bob chaired the formal part of the LAIRD meeting.
    Bob read part of the minutes and then a decision was made not to read the remainder unless there were concerns.

  • Additions to the Agenda:
    • Request for $ for Community awareness from CASA
    • Diane Cuts – sharing of information
    • Community Connections sharing of proposal and request for $

  • PDD report – Grace Higgins reported the following:

  • PDD budget set. The revised funding can be located on the web.
    PDD is continuing to build on “Supporting People in Community. A number of new initiatives and updates can be located on the web site.
    Highlights:
    • The 2002-2003 Satisfaction Survey results
    • The Staff turnover rates are available. The staff turnover is 28%.
    • September newsletter was sent out.
    • Appointment of new board members: Central PDD chair – Ron Crossley; board member Roger Will. Both members are from Red Deer. Grace was acting chair since Gail Moss’s resignation.
    • Looking Ahead – the consultants have been meeting with various stakeholders throughout Central Alberta.
    • PDD awards – information was reported in the newsletter. A reminder that the Norm Macleod award applications.
    • Board Strategic Planning looking at the community and how we get where we want to. Self-Advocacy workbooks are available through Stephen Golub. Next meeting is November 17, 2003. Stephen can be contacted at 340-4877 or

  • Self Advocacy Reports:

    • Eagles:
      • Change to a “Board of Governors. Members will apply to be on the board.
      • Thanksgiving Dinner October 8, 2003-10-07
      • Thursday, October 2, 2003 presentation at Nelson School in Lacombe, Special Classes, Parent Council

    • CARS Cougars:
      • Cookie Dough sell and more Pens for fundraising events
      • Halloween bash – October 8, 2003, dress up for bowling and supper. $8.00 for members, $10.00 non members

    • Community Connections:
      • Asked to come under new business

  • Financial Report:
    • Laurie reported no changes since September.
    • Requests:
        CASA is in need of $800.00 for Community Awareness. They are requesting $200 for facility, $500.00 for Northern Lights. $100.00 for Miscellaneous. They would like $400.00 from LAIRD and $400.00 from PDD.

    • Motion:
      • L.J made a motion to request money for Community Awareness in the amount of $400.00
      • Seconded: by Diane Cuts.

    • Requests:
      • CASA is in need of $800.00 for Community Awareness.

    • Revised Motion:
      • L.J. revised her motion to state That LAIRD support Community Awareness by giving $400.00 to CASA and further support CASA in their request for funding from PDD. Application to go to Grace Higgins and Lorne McEwan.
      • Seconded by Diane Cuts.
      • Carried

    • Motion:
      • Harvey made a motion that LAIRD pay $107.00 “Dealing with Death and Dying” for rental of the Margaret Parson Theatre.
      • Seconded by Scott.
      • Carried.

  • David Saltvold, Gordon Jesse and Gail Finley presented Community Connections ( CSS Self Advocacy) presented their proposal for “Learning Initiative Program”. The intent was to make application for PDD learning initiative dollars.

    • Motion:
      • Gord made a motion to support Community Connections to make application to PDD Learning Initiatives for $1500.00.
      • Seconded by Diane Cuts.
      • Carried.

    • Laurie and Diane will assist group by checking on the availability of the dollars and further processes. Members are to review the proposal with further discussion to take place on the money issue at the next meeting.

  • Information Sharing:

    • Consumer Conference:
      • Next meeting on October 6, 2003 @ 1:15 p.m. in Wetaskiwin @ PDD office.
      • Fundraising ongoing
      • Several committee volunteers from CSS, CARS Cougars, and Lacombe Eagles

    • Community Living Awareness
      • 9 organizations participating
      • Red Deer Centre information session October 4, 2003-10-07 Pancake breakfast, 7:30 – 10:30, Red Deer Armories, $2.00 food bank donation. See Debbie Murray if you can help
      • Wheelchair Basketball, RDC. See Debbie Murray for information and if you can help.

    • Update on Self Advocacy Summit Meeting
      • No one available to attend meeting in Edmonton

    • Update on Family Networks – Diane Cuts
      • Family guide being written, author meeting with families now.
      • PCP, Family Network involve. No longer a pilot project, actively, used now.
      • Will be a parent section in PDD Newsletter
      • Networks are growing
      • December 9 “Dealing with Death and Dying”.
      • Share information with families pertaining to contact list of mentors on gateway
      • See Diane if you need more information on Family Network
      • “Mothers of Courage, October 9th “Rough Cuts” on CBC. Family is from Wainwright. This film will be available @CIRS for your rental
      • Jeff Strully – send registration to Wetaskiwin CSS rather than Camrose.
      • Shared “Mental Health Matters” RD Public Library 4:30-8:30p.m. Depression
      • “Magic of Community Development”, Thursday November 20, 2003 @ 11:45-4:30 p.m., $40.0000 includes lunch, Capri Center, Red Deer. Email blbunbury@shaw.ca for information / tickets.
